Timeline

Overview

SmartList is a mobile app that helps users create a shopping list, allows them to create an inventory list of groceries that should be at home and also update the members of the household.
I founded the SmartList app together with my roommate so that we too can improve the process of purchasing our groceries.
The app is in the Hebrew language because it is adapted for the Israeli market

Problem

Many people find it difficult to keep track of what groceries they need to buy for their home, they will often buy things they don’t need, and there is a high probability that they will also forget to buy things they do need

Solution

Mobile app that allows users to create an inventory list of groceries for their home, add groceries to a shopping list and share it with household members.

Online Survey

To better understand what people’s main challenges are when buying groceries and who buys the groceries at home, I wrote a survey and distributed it among friends and family.
19 participants answered the survey and these are the most interesting insights I found

52% of the participants throw away food often

78% of participants use a mobile app to manage their shopping list

63% of participants often find they run out of groceries after shopping

User Interview

I interviewed 3 participants who answered the survey to hear in their own words what problems and challenges they encounter when buying groceries

Describe to me your shopping process at the supermarket

“I usually go to the store with a list of items I need, and I like to stick to my list as much as possible so that I don't overspend. I start by going to the fresh produce section, then I proceed to pick up other items as I need them."

"I usually make a list of the items I need before I go to the supermarket. I start by going through the aisles and checking off items from my list. I try to stick to my list as much as possible, but sometimes I'll pick up a few extra things if they catch my eye."

"I prefer to do my shopping online, so I usually browse the supermarket's website from the comfort of my home and add the items to my virtual cart. Then I proceed to checkout and schedule a pickup or delivery at my convenience."

How do you currently keep track of the groceries you need to buy?

“usually rely on my memory to keep track of the groceries I need, but it often leads to me forgetting items or buying things I don't need.”

“I currently keep track of my groceries by making a list on my phone. I try to plan out my meals for the week and make a list of the ingredients I need.”

“I currently use a simple notebook to jot down my grocery list, but I find it hard to keep track of it and often forget to bring it with me to the store.”

What is your biggest challenge in the grocery shopping process?

“My biggest challenge is being able to keep track of what I already have at home, and what I need to buy.”

“My biggest challenge in the grocery shopping process is knowing what I am missing in stock and not realizing it until I get home. This often leads to multiple trips to the store and spending more money than I intended.”

“My biggest challenge is staying organized during the grocery shopping process. I often forget important items and end up buying groceries I don't need”

Conclusions

Because I designed this app for personal consumption, I think the biggest challenge was to maintain the “I’m not the user” approach.
I admit that this is a problem that really bothers me to manage the household and luckily my rommate is a talented web developer and we are very excited to use it.
Send me a message if you are also interested in trying our beta version
